Currently, the Music Department has over 1,800 alumni. Our graduates have a wide diversity of careers that span Asia, the United States, and Europe. Below is a listing of a few of our outstanding alumni.
Yuying Su(蘇宇瑩)is currently a full-time faculty member at the the Tianjin Juilliard School, where she serves as a chamber music coach and collaborative piano instructor in the graduate school. Dr. Su has taught and performed in the U.S., China, and Europe since moving from Taiwan in 2006, after graduating from Tunghai University. Most recently, Dr. Su was invited to join a highly anticipated tour throughout mainland China with Christian Lindberg, world renowned trombonist, composer, and conductor. Prior to her position at Tianjin Juilliard, Su served as a full-time collaborative pianist at the Oberlin Conservatory and was a piano faculty member at the Oberlin Community Music School. Dr. Su has also taught and served as a collaborative pianist for the Perlman Music Program, Interlochen Center for the Arts, American Viola Society, Cooper International Violin Competition, and Meadowmount School of Music Summer Festival. In the past years, she also joined the Land of Enchantment Opera, Young Artist Program at the Butler Opera Center, and Franco-American Vocal Academy as vocal coach and collaborative pianist.
I-Chiao Shih(石易巧)earned her undergraduate degree from Tunghai as a voice major. She later moved to Germany to study at the Staalichen Hochscule für Musik Trossigen and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. Ms. Shih has won many awards, including Best Young Musician award from the National Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan (2008), third prize for Lieder Duo at the German Music College Competition (2011), and second prize at the Paula Salomon-Lindenberg "Das Lied" Competition (2011). She was also a recipient of the Wagner Scholarship at the Bayreuth Festival (2014). She has performed numerous operatic roles and has given many song recitals throughout Germany. Her first CD, Like the Sky in Rome, a collection of favorite songs by Franz Liszt, was released on GENUIN Classics label in 2016. Since the 2012 season, Ms. Shih has been an appointed member of the Theater Ulm ensemble. While spending the majority of her time in Europe, Miss Shih is still active as a performer at some of the most prestigious venues in Taiwan. In 2018, she collaborated with the Taiwan National Symphony Orchesrtra to perform Mahler's "Song of the Earth" at the National Concert Hall in Taipei.
Cheng-feng Hsieh(謝承峯), an international Steinway Artist, is a professor and the head of the keyboard department at the School of Music of East China Normal University in Shanghai. He has received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Tunghai University, under the guidance of Dr. Tzong-kai Guo and Dr. Jia-hui Ai, and earned DMA at College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. He has a large number of solo, concerto, and chamber music pieces from Baroque to Contemporary, and often invited to give lectures and perform around the world, serving as competition judges etc. His performance albums "Farewell" and "Abundance" are released by Shanghai Music Publishing House. His book "Random Walk in the keyboard -The Interpretation of Western Piano Music" has attracted widespread attention since its publication. In addition, interdisciplinary thinking has been conducted on music performance and piano techniques, and multiple related papers have been published in the Journal of the Central Conservatory of Music, Huang Zhong, Piano Art, as well as in collections such as "Analysis of Modern Piano Teaching Methods" and "Theory and Methods of Music Performing Art and Culture Research".
Following her undergraduate studies at Tunghai as a piano major, Mei-Chun Chen(陳玫君)earned her Master of Arts and PhD degrees in composition from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Since then, she has composed numerous choral pieces, song cycles, piano compositions, and chamber works that have been published and recorded. Her compositions have received awards from the International League of Women, the Mid-American Contemporary Music Center, the National Concert Hall in Taipei, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, the College Music Society, and the International Clarinet Association. Dr. Chen has been on the full-time music faculty at Tunghai since 1998, teaching composition, music theory, contemporary music history, orchestration, and counterpoint. Regarded as an exemplary teacher at our university, she received awards for teaching excellence in 1999, 2012, and 2013.
Professor Chia-Huei Ai(艾嘉蕙)received her undergraduate degree as a piano major from Tunghai before furthering her studies at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. There, she received a Master of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance, graduating with honors. Professor Ai has long been on the full-time piano faculty at Tunghai and has also served as a Visiting Scholar at University of Southern California in Los Angeles and as a Guest Professor at Ohio State. She has performed as a chamber musician, accompanist, and soloist with orchestra and has taught students who have won prizes in piano competitions both in Taiwan and abroad. In recognition of her accomplishments as a musician and teacher, Professor Ai received a Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater, The National Chia-Yi Girls' High School.
Yu-Wen Wang(王裕文)received his undergraduate degree as a saxophone major from Tunghai before pursuing advanced studies in France and the United States. He received many honors in Paris, including the Prix de Perfectionnement at the Ecole Nationale de Musique, first prize at the Conservatoire Municipal Gabriel Fauré des Lilas, and first prize at the Conservatoire National de Region de Versailles. Professor Wang is now one of the most active saxophone performers and teachers in Taiwan. Of his recorded performances, his album Saxophobia won the 23rd Golden Melody Award(金曲獎). He has also conducted many saxophone ensembles throughout the island and has performed in the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. Professor Wang presently teaches saxophone at National Chia-Yi University and at Tunghai.
Pei-Yeh Tsai(蔡佩燁)received her undergraduate degree at Tunghai as a piano major before going to Peabody Conservatory of The John Hopkins to earn a graduate diploma. She later received a Master of Music from The Julliard School and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University, both in piano performance. She has played with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, alongside as principal pianist for the Peoria Symphony and the New Bedford Symphony. Her performance is best described by cellist Yo-Yo Ma: "…a powerhouse of a pianist, and she plays with an incredible depth of soul. Her love of her instrument is perceptible…she draws the listener in with a great range of color and expression." She was first-prize winner in the Aaron Richmond International Piano Competition, was a recipient of the Sergio Fiorentino Memorial Award, the Viardo Prize, and the Rose Marie Miholland Award. Dr. Tsai has performed at Harvard University, New York's Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Recital Hall. In addition to performing throughout the United States, she has appeared in concert in Spain, Moscow, and Austria. She has been a staff accompanist for workshops at the Tanglewood Institute and has performed regularly with the Metropolitan Wind Symphony in the Boston area. Dr. Tsai is now serving as pianist for the Chicago Civic Orchestra and the Peoria Symphony Orchestra.
One of Taiwan's most popular musical internet celebrities, Chiang Yu-Ting(江宇婷)graduated with a Master's Degree in Piano Performance from the Music Department at Tunghai University in 2009. After graduation, she was active as a piano collaborator, performing with many musicians throughout Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Beijing and Tianjin. In 2019, Ms. Chiang founded her own YouTube channel, "I am Teacher Chiang", which currently has 600,000 subscribers and is well received by audiences throughout the Chinese-speaking world. Ms. Chiang often invites internationally renowned performers to collaborate with her on her YouTube channel, invariably creating an atmosphere that is both educational and entertaining. Currently she is serving as the host of the public television children's music program "Classical Magic".
Yu-Hsuan Liao(廖又萱)earned her bachelor's degree from Tunghai as a piano major. She continued her education with Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in piano performance from University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Liao has worked with the American Repertory Ensemble (A.R.E.), performing piano solo, chamber music, and vocal accompaniment in its concert series. Her solo performance with A.R.E., "Valses Poéticos, Passion at Play," was nominated for best instrumentalist in the Austin Critics Table Award for the 2008-09 season. Since 2011, she has served as Coordinator of the Keyboard Program at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Her book, Manuel de Falla's Cuatro Piezas Españoles: Combinations and Transformations of the Spanish Folk Modes is available at Amazon. Professor Liao is currently serving as president for the West Virginia Music Teachers Association, and is the faculty advisor for the Music Teachers National Association, Sheherd Collegiate Chapter. She regularly gives masterclasses and is in high demand for adjudication at festivals and competitions around the West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and the Washington D. C. region.
After studying architecture at Fengchia University, Yen-Chiang Che(車炎江)pursued his studies at Tunghai as a voice major, graduating with distinction with a Master of Arts degree in 2000. Active not only as a baritone in operatic roles and recitals, he earned a PhD in musicology from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2011. Dr. Che has since worked as a musical scholar in association with both the National Symphony Orchestra and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and has been active as a participant in music conferences in Taichung and Taipei. Dr. Che is now on the full-time faculty at Taipei National University of the Arts as a musicologist, lecturing on music history and aesthetics of Western music.
Nai-Wen Chang(張乃文)received her undergraduate degree as a voice major at Tunghai and later earned a PhD in music therapy from University of Minnesota. She has since established herself as one of the pioneers of music therapy in Taiwan, having devoted nearly 30 years to this field. She has previously worked as a clinical music therapist at teaching hospitals such as the Rehabilitation Department of Linkou and Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospitals, and the Child Development and Behavioral Science Department of China Medical University Children's Hospital. She initiated the establishment of the Credit Program in Music Therapy at Tunghai University in 2015, and in 2019, she launched Taiwan's first master's program in Music Therapy as a major. Furthermore, she expanded the undergraduate Music Therapy major program in 2024. In the same year, she was honored with the Excellent Mentor Award from Tunghai University.
Shu-Han Yang(楊書涵)graduated as a piano major from Tunghai before pursuing graduate work in conducting at the National Taiwan Normal University and at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. He is currently the Associate Conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and previously served as Associate Conductor of the Taiwan Philharmonic in the 2021/2022 season. He won the First Prize in the 10th International Grzegorz Fitelberg Competition for Conductors in 2017 and received numerous invitations to collaborate with the Silesian Philharmonic, the Polish Baltic Philharmonic, the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Brandenburger Symphoniker, and many others. Since 2016 he conducts regularly the Camerata Taiwan. In 2022 he conducted Humperdinck's "Hänsel und Gretel" at the National Taichung Theater. His appearances at music festivals include the Taiwan International Festival of Arts, the Weiwuying International Music Festival, and other music festivals. He was one of the two conductors selected for the Mentoring Program of Peter Eötvös Foundation in 2018. In 2017 he was invited to work with Jun Märkl at the Pacific Music Festival. He was one of the chosen conductors to study with Riccardo Muti on the production of Verdi's "Falstaff" at the Italian Opera Academy in 2015.
